PROGRAM
The work of Pablo Ruiz Picasso, whose death would have taken place 50 years ago in 2023, has a universal value but is also the result of a very specific historical context. Guernica, which came to Sweden on two occasions (1938 Liljevalch Museum – 1957 Moderna Musee), is fundamentally linked to the Spanish exile and, in particular, to the artistic exile, for whose support Picasso earmarked the proceeds of the travelling exhibitions of the work that were organised. The Spanish artist in exile in Paris also came into contact with various figures in Swedish politics and art, and it is interesting to highlight this on this anniversary.
1) ROUND TABLE – FIRST SESSION: MONDAY 4 AT 6 PM
Instituto Cervantes: Bryggargatan 12, Stockholm
« Picasso and his support to the Spanish exiled artists. The brigadista Rudolf Berner and his support for artists ».
Juan Manuel Bonet: « Perpignan, Toulouse, Paris: capitals of Our artistic exile. »
Miguel Cabañas: « Picasso and his help to exiled artists. » (on video)
Per Lindblom: « Rudolf Berner, the Swedish anarchist who helped Baltasar Lobo and other Spanish exiles to flee from the Argelès-sur-Mer camp.
Javier Campillo: « The exile of Spanish artists in Picasso’s Paris (1939-1944): the testimony of Carles Fontseré. »
Solidarity among artists during the Spanish Civil War was part of a broader movement of cultural resistance against fascism. Artists and intellectuals across Europe recognized its threat and used their creative abilities to fight it. Many prominent Swedish artists (Vera Nilsson, Sven X-et Eriksson, Siri Derkert and Albin Amelin, among others) actively participated in the Solidarity Movement formed to support the democratically elected government of Spain. The Swedish government remained officially neutral during the Spanish Civil War, but the Solidarity Movement pressured it to take a stand against fascism and support the Spanish republicans. The movement had a significant impact on Swedish public opinion. The art produced during this era reflected the urgency and passion of the anti-fascist movement, and remains an important legacy of this period in Swedish art history.
2) ROUND TABLE – SECOND SESSION: TUESDAY 5 AT 18H
Waldemarsudde Museum: Prins Eugens Väg 6, Estocolmo
« Picasso and his help to Spanish artists in exile. Guernica in Stockholm and the Swedish art
of solidarity with Spain ».
Amanda Herold: « Picasso, father of the Spanish artistic exile (a multifaceted support) ».
Genoveva Tusell: « Guernica’s travels, including his two visits to Stockholm (1938, 1956). »
Cecilia Widenheim: « Swedish artists in solidarity with Republican Spain. »
Michel Lefebvre-Peña: « Martí Bas, Mariano-Miguel Montañés and Robert Capa, together with Picasso. »
